walk it out

My hubby and I have recently established a new "rule" in our relationship that has kinda been an A-HA! moment for us, so I thought I'd share. In the last few months, if we get into a discussion about something and it starts to get heated, one of us always has the option to walk it out. Yes, I know what you're thinking.... like the rap song from summer of 2006?! You got it! In fact, as soon as the beat drops in my head, I immediately feel a little better as this song takes me back to my days at SDSU, being silly and dancing around the sorority house with my girls. Have a listen, it's bound to put a little smile on your face too.... :)

Anyways, I digress.  Point being, when things start getting heated in a discussion with your lover, your friend, your roommate, your mom, your boss - whoever - it's super important to take a pause and practice mindfulness. When caught up in the heat of the moment, we often say and do things that are not representative of our highest, most loving and evolved selves. And that's not cute! So, the trick is to call a time-out before anything hurtful gets said, grab the dog and walk it out. It's amazing what some fresh air and a change in scenery can do for your soul. No dog? No biggie. Walk it out, nonetheless. One 15-minute walk around the block around midnight last night allowed me to clear my head, cool off, practice some ujjayi yoga breath and remember what's really important. LOVE. It always comes back to LOVE. The big picture is that we chose to spend this one wild, precious life together because we love each other and we're in this for the long run so everything else can just walk it out.
