6 Ways to Fight Negativity and Promote Serenity

6 Ways to Fight Negativity and Promote Serenity by guest blogger, Tara Heath

Between the demands of work, your family life, your health, paying bills (you get the idea), it is easy to get caught in the trap of focusing on the negative. After all, when you have so much on your plate, or it seems like no matter what you do you’re still behind, it’s easy to feel as if you are stuck in a rut and not achieving anything.

While feelings of negativity are natural, and bad things do happen, if you are starting to feel like all you are focusing on is the negative, you need to change your thinking. Constantly looking at the downside of things and believing you’re always the victim will do nothing to better your situation. The bad will seem worse, the good won’t seem good at all, and you may even find yourself not enjoying the little things in life that you once enjoyed.

Choose to start looking on the bright side of things, remembering that every gray cloud has a silver lining. Thinking more serenely will help you not only feel better, it will also help you achieve more in your life, turning those negative things into positives. Here are some tips to get started on bursting your negative bubble!

1) Make a Change
Take a look at your life. You might need to make a change. Try to pinpoint what it is in your life that is getting you so down. Is it your situation with a friend? Is it work? Is it how you feel about your appearance? Once you figure out what is bringing you down, start thinking about ways that you can turn it into a positive. For example, if you are having problems with a friend, sit down and have a talk; if you are not happy about work, maybe think about a career move; or if you aren’t happy with the way you look, start exercising and watching what you eat. Grab the bull by the horns and start making changes in your life in order to improve your outlook and increase your serenity.

2) Look at the Bright Side.
While yes, you may hit some bumps in the road, there is always something to be happy about. If money is tight and you can’t afford to go on a big trip, think about how lucky you are to have a roof over your head and clothes on your back. If you aren’t happy with your job, just remember how lucky you are that you do have a job. Looking at the bright side will certainly help you feel more at peace.

3) Make Time for YOU!
When you feel like you are constantly being pulled in 800 different directions, it is easy to start feeling negative. It’s hard to keep positive when you feel like you never have time for you. So, start making some time in your schedule for just that! Even if the floor needs to be mopped, put it off and go take a bubble bath -- the dirty floor will still be there tomorrow.

4) Wear a Smile
It’s amazing how something as simple as a smile can change your entire outlook on life. Actually make an effort to smile more often and you will start to feel like you are being lifted from negativity and filled with positivity.

5) Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Yes, it can be frustrating when the cat knocks over your paperwork or your child spills a glass of milk. But instead of getting worked up, just shrug it off. You can always fix the paperwork and clean up the milk.

6) Do Good
Do something good for someone else. Doing a good deed for someone else can turn your whole day around! Volunteer at a soup kitchen, offer to watch your friend’s children so she can have a date with her husband, pick up litter on the side of the road, or help out with homeless animals. Giving of yourself can help you forget about all of the trials and tribulations in your life and allow you to focus on the good.

Whatever you choose to do, turning around your negative thinking doesn't have to be difficult--in fact, it can become enjoyable to try and do one thing off this list each day, or maybe each week, and you’ll see how quickly you feel better. No one likes a Negative Nancy, so try spreading some positivity.
